"The Complete Book of Foaling : An Illustrated Guide for the Foaling Attendant"
by Karen E. N. Hayes
Not only do I highly recommend this book, I was privileged to be in on it's creation.  Karen Hayes was my veterinarian at the time this book was written.  I was about to have my first foal and was given the manuscript to read in preparation, both for my new experience and as a critic who was a novice to foaling.  I made a few suggestions which were followed, and was totally prepared for my new experience.  I still read it over again before each foaling season and gift it to special friends.

Karen is a great teacher, and this book is totally thorough in it's coverage of the subject.  I I consider it necessary reading for anyone who has or are planning to breed horses.

One word of caution.  While most foalings do go without incident, this book describes in detail everything that can go wrong.  It can be a little scary, but with this knowledge you will be prepared for the rare emergency, if it ever comes.

This is another book I would not be without.  It gives clear and concise instructions for treatment when a veterinarian in unavailable, or while waiting for the veterinarian to arrive.

Authentic Arabian Bloodstock
by Judith Forbis
If you are a student of the Egyptian Arabian horse and can only get one book, this is the one I recommend.  It is an extensive photographic documentation of most of the most important Egyptian Arabians throughout time.  Less than 100 available as of Feb.12, 2001 and in it's third printing.

"The Stallion : A Breeding Guide for Owners and Handlers"
by James P. McCall, IDG Books Worldwide; 1995
This book is easy reading, and gives you a good understanding of the stallion, stallion management, and what makes him tick from a grass roots approach.  I considered it to be one which would be better read by people with some stallion experience, as his approach can be a little strong in the first chapter.  It is, however, a very useful book.  Some articles by Dr. McCall are available in the news section of this site.

"Blessed Are The Broodmares"
by M. Phyllis Lose, IDG Books Worldwide, 1997 (second edition)
This book is a little outdated, but is still a good one for newer breeders.  It gives a detailed explanation of the mare and foaling process in a simple language.  Again, caution is applied as she too describes some rare but alarming possibilities.

"Blessed Are The Foals"
by M. Phyllis Lose, IDG Books Worldwide, 1998 (second edition)
Picking up where the broodmare book leaves off, it is written in a very understandable language.

"Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal"
by Robert M. Miller
Handling of the newborn foal sets the pattern for the remainder of it's life.  This is said to be the best source of advice for these first days and weeks.  You will be amazed at the difference this advice can make in the mental development of your foals.  I'm waiting to try it on my first foal since receiving my new copy. 144 pages.

"Shipping Semen? How to Have a Successful Experience"
by Pennie Ahmed, Winlock Pub Co; 1998
Successfully shipping equine semen is not a complicated task, but often it seems that the process is shrouded in a cloak of mystery. This book is reputed to remove that cloak, and assist everyone in achieving successful conception rates!  I've just ordered it myself.

Arabians: The Classic Arabian Horse
by Peter Upton
I was privileged to meet Mr. Upton in Cairo, where he was judging their Egyptian National Horse Show.  He is a wonderful author, judge and artist as well as a charming individual.

This is a gorgeous book, with over 250 photographs by, whom I consider to be the two finest equestrian and animal photographers today - Rik Van Lent, Jr. and Sr..  It is also a fascinating history lesson, Arabians begins with a thorough examination of the horse's origins, dating back to 1700 B.C.  256 pages.

Peter has several out of print book, including one that features his beautiful drawings.  If you like this book, Amazon has an "out of print" search where you might just find others,  just be sure to get there through our site. :)  Barbara

"Equine Reproduction"
Edited by Drs. McKinnon and Voss, published by Lea & Febiger; 1993.
This is commonly referred to as "the" current text book on the subject, and is used by most veterinary teaching Universities.  Although very technical, the average to advanced breeder should find answers to any questions on equine reproduction.  There are 1100 pages in 118 chapters, so it is very comprehensive.
